Theme: “Science-Driven Stewardship for a Sustainable Blue Economy”

ARBEC II is a collective commitment to address the critical issues affecting oceans, lakes, and waterways. Climate change, overfishing, pollution, and habitat degradation demand innovative and science-driven solutions.

The Aquaponics System at Maseno University

Maseno University as one of the partners is exhibiting various Technologies, Innovations, and Management Practices (TIMPs) from the research projects at Maseno University. These include Aquaponics, which allows the production of fish and crops in a closed loop and optimizes water and nutrient usage. On display are also different products from Black Soldier Fly (BSF) including BSF-based fish feeds and oil.

Dr Eric Ogello Department of Animal and Fisheries Sciences, Maseno University presents on Comparative Analysis of Aquaculture Development Pathways in Africa and Asia: Case Studies Within a Resource-Use Efficiency Context

At ARBEC II in Kisumu, Kenya, Dr. Erick Ogello presented on "Comparative analysis of aquaculture development pathways in Africa and Asia: Case studies within a resource-use efficiency context." His presentation highlighted the rapid growth of global aquaculture and emphasized its efficiency in resource use compared to other animal protein sources. He provided a comparative analysis, revealing that Asia, which produces 90% of the world's aquaculture, has achieved significant advancements through resource-efficient technologies and integrated practices. Conversely, Africa, contributing only 2% to global production, faces numerous challenges such as limited resources and climate change impacts. Dr. Ogello underscored the need for Africa to adopt sustainable aquaculture technologies from Asia to enhance production, improve livelihoods, and ensure environmental conservation.
