Programme Overview

The School of Nursing at Maseno University was established in July 2017. Initially, nursing was a department in the School of Medicine since 2012. The school has four departments namely: Medical-Surgical Nursing, Midwifery, Community Health and Nursing Education, Leadership and Research. The school’s offices are located in Kisumu City and Siriba campuses. The main teaching hospital of the school is Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), Kisumu. The School of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with IT to increase access to health services through training highly qualified professional nurses to be responsive to the health needs of the people in the lake region and beyond. In line with this, the programme also prepares its graduates to bridge the changing technological dynamics in health care through its information technology (IT) component.  The programme inculcates flexibility that allows the students to develop an interest in the different specialties in nursing. Towards this end, the programme is tailored to include the basic sciences related to nursing as well as the different specialty areas.

A cycle of the programme consists of four years of study. An academic year comprises three terms. In the initial years of the students’ training, the focus is on basic sciences and introduction to nursing as a profession. The students in the first and second years are in the Siriba Campus. Year three and four focuses on clinical nursing, leadership and research. The students in years three and four are based in the Kisumu campus.
