The department of Midwifery is one of the four departments in the School of Nursing of Maseno University. The major focus of the department is to provide research-led teaching and produce graduates in nursing who are capable of working locally, nationally and internationally in the rapidly changing global environment.
The department aspires to work in close partnership with midwives, nurses, obstetricians and other health care professionals to embed knowledge, skills and positive attitude to students throughout all stages in their learning and development.
Students are taught on the care of normal pregnancy and childbirth and to have an understanding of childbearing as a social, cultural and biological process so that they competently exercise clinical skills and decision-making.
We foster critical thinking in the academic setting that will extend into the practice setting and forms the basis for sound professional practice.
We continue to build collaborative research links locally, nationally and internationally to bring about new knowledge to our students and other health care professionals in the broad field of reproductive health so as to improve maternal health and neonatal health in order to reduce related morbidity and mortality in Kenya.
